Getting Back to Business!

Learning transferable skills to prepare our students for success.

This week, ³ûÖÊÓƵ’s Undercroft and Garden were transformed into bustling hubs of economic activity, as our Year 10 Commerce students reached the culmination of their “Running a Business” topic by taking part in a Commerce Market!

During this term’s lessons, students spent time going through the theory of management, finance, employment relations, operations and marketing. Once these aspects were sufficiently mastered, girls were split into groups of four and assigned roles such as Finance or Operations Manager. They were then challenged with completing a host of tasks, from designing their own marketing and branding, to creating budgets, pricings and financial statements. They were also responsible for solving any issues that arose along the way, to try and simulate real-life experience. This preparation not only allowed students to get a glimpse into what it takes to run a business behind the scenes, but it also put their teamwork and communication skills to the test.

Finally, over Wednesday and Thursday, and after weeks of campus-wide promotional activities, students took turns running their businesses during lunchtime. Reminiscent of London’s famous Borough Market, each team was assigned a stall that they were responsible for decorating with their branding, products and pricing, all with the aim of trying to attract as many customers as possible! Teams had to work under pressure, as students from other year groups descended on the stalls en masse, ready to feast upon a wide range of goods catered towards a hungry lunchtime crowd. Some businesses made full use of the technological advances now available in stores, and had phone apps that accepted digital payments!

Finally, students will be assessed through a business report, that will evaluate their operation throughout the whole term.

Well done, Year 10!
