Independent Theatre

Just steps away from ³ûÖÊÓƵ’s Miller Street campus, the Independent Theatre is a hidden gem in North Sydney, a true foundation of Sydney’s Performing Arts history. Featuring original and unique architecture in the Auditorium, Foyers, and upstairs Seaborn Function Room, the Independent Theatre is a unique and special venue.

Originally a Victorian tram depot at the time of Federation, then a Vaudevillian Theatre as part of the great Sydney Coliseum venues, and home to Dame Doris Fitton’s (DBE) Independent Theatre Company from 1939, the Theatre has stood the test of time, under various ownerships. It continues to be the proud home to varying forms of the Performing Arts.

In 2013, in a demonstration of our commitment to the arts, ³ûÖÊÓƵ purchased this gem from the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, adding it to the School’s list of treasured assets. We were delighted to take stewardship of the theatre which had long hosted School drama performances, music recitals and other presentations and functions.

The 300-seat theatre is equipped with a Steinway Concert Grand Piano, full lighting and sound rig and AV projection capabilities. It provides an educational and performance facility for our students as well as a venue available for public hire for productions, concerts and events hosted by the local and wider communities.

If you are interested in hiring the venue for your next production, concert or event, please contact Theatre Manager Mr Theo Carroll (tcarroll@wenona.nsw.edu.au) or visit the .
