Express Yourself

Allard House Captain, Julia, discusses how she expresses herself through her eclectic taste in music, and encourages others not to be shy to express themselves in whatever way they see fit!

Each week, our Student Leaders share their insights with their peers in Assembly.

Julia Prefect wide

Good morning, everyone! My name’s Julia. I’m a House Captain of the amazing Allard House.

I love Spotify. I love curating playlists that reflect every emotion, moving from my “retirement home” playlist to Swedish house music, to Lana Del Ray to JoJo Siwa, based on my mood. I must preface though, that I do not have a single musical bone in my body – unfortunately, my talents extend as far as the equivalent of a karate green belt on recorder. However, while I wholeheartedly admire those of you who play an instrument, I pride myself on listening to music. I like to think music playlists are windows into our likes and dislikes, and our individuality. Different music playlists can define different seasons of your life. So, perhaps we should celebrate our playlists and “seasons” to elevate our true selves.

In my beloved Spotify account, you will come across my Spanish playlist. The beauty of not entirely understanding the lyrics is that I focus on the tune and rhythm. The maracas and guitar send me into a state of jolliness, as I absorb the energy and passion. Whilst preparing for each of my assessments this term, I had Kali Uchis and Bailar Contigo in my ears. Between the rapid Spanish and the effects of a large flat white, I felt empowered to attack every question with astonishing confidence.

During my “State Library Sundays”, I fill the deafening silence of the library hall with my “retirement home” playlist. The soothing depth of the lyrics of Frank Sinatra, Betty Carter, Ray Charles, and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s City of Stars, ease me into a calm study mindset. However, as Maths study requires major mental strength, I call on my house music playlist. The intensity of the bass stimulates my brain cells for differentiation, trigonometry and hardcore graphing. The high-hats and rapid tempo provide a contagious motivation, as can be heard in the Cardio Studio every Wednesday afternoon.

Finally, on to my 2000’s Renaissance girl music – Rihanna, Kesha, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber and Timberlake provide perfect backing tracks for our gorgeous girl walks or unforgettable Allard House meetings! Good golly, this playlist can truly provide a connection between people.

Individual playlists influence and inspire me, romanticising each facet of my life. Every little season is distinctly mine and represents a new version of me. Through each playlist, I grow as I shift from Frank Ocean to Frank Sinatra or Chase and Status to Fred Again, my character developing throughout. So, I encourage you to share with others your own forms of expression, the things that make you distinct. Celebrate what makes you special to truly shape and elevate your lifestyle and always keep you jolly! Thank you!
